Day 16

Oct. 17th, 2013 10:55 am
desertvixen: (Initial D)
Working on letter stalking, which of course means first going through the DYW letter spreadsheet.

I know they have a fandom-sorted one but I prefer to go through the page-by-page one, because it's easier to tell when new stuff has been added.  So far I have identified 136 letters worth looking at.

ETA: Down to about 60 letters to read (20 or so I have marked for further pondering)!

Day 14

Oct. 15th, 2013 09:23 am
desertvixen: (nancy not my day)
My Dear Yuletide Writer letter is updated, but I need to post it.

Lions won yesterday, but they were not the game on at MWR.

 Homework is still not done.

Can't load more than one page at a time, so no FB chat with [livejournal.com profile] desert_sdwndr before work.  Sadness.

It's also time for [livejournal.com profile] intoabar signups, until the 27th of the month.

Day 13

Oct. 14th, 2013 10:36 am
desertvixen: (Initial D)
My Yuletide signup is done - although I am a little concerned that I did not get an email from AO3.  The deadline is on the evening of the 14th, so I'll have time to double check.  I'm pondering adding one more request, but not sure - the four I have in are pretty solid.

My DYW letter just has a placeholder.  I plan to work on it tonight.

I also got my snark of the free LKH story "Shutdown" up here.

The homework is due on Wednesday, not Sunday, so I have more time to play with it.

Going to hopefully watch football at the MWR in a little bit.

... I have been a good girl this year.

General things: Stories don’t need to be super sappy and sugary , but please don’t get all grim and dark.  Bittersweet can work, as long as there are hopeful tinges.  Holiday-themed is fine if that’s where the story takes you.  I prefer het or gen on the fandoms listed.  I am deployed to Afghanistan this year, so very much looking forward to Yuletide as pretty much the only part of my Christmas-time celebration that's not getting messed up.

Have fun writing whichever one we match on, and I know I'll have fun reading it!

Nancy Drew, Miss Marple, Miss Scarlet, and Patience Chartley walk into Yuletide... )

Day 12

Oct. 13th, 2013 08:42 am
desertvixen: (smart = sexy)
I had to skip a day due to a change in the work schedule and talking with [livejournal.com profile] desert_sdwndr a little too long.

I am not doing all that great on time today, either - priorities are Yuletide nominations, paper that's due on Sunday, and trying to read the free LKH story so I can snark on it.

The new Yahoo Mail is not user-friendly - apparently it did not occur to some that there is a reason why we've stuck with Yahoo and not gone Gmail?  It's annoying because some of the features do not show up at work, which is where I read most of my email.

Day 10

Oct. 11th, 2013 09:10 am
desertvixen: (Initial D)
 Still pondering YT noms.

And not getting up early enough to write anything insightful on here.

Day 9

Oct. 10th, 2013 09:15 am
desertvixen: (Initial D)
Not much time to post, as I have bee looking at Yuletide summaries and trying to finish the Barbara Hambly book.

Unfortunately, there's that whole work thing.

Day 8

Oct. 9th, 2013 09:03 am
desertvixen: (Initial D)
Happy, because I went to the gym.
Annoyed, because I forgot about something I had wanted to attend.

Yuletide signups are OPEN!  There's a week, so I plan to dither for a day or two, then look at the list of signups and make final decisions.

Day 7

Oct. 8th, 2013 09:07 am
desertvixen: (schroedingers cat)
It's my 15th Army Birthday... five more years to go.

I made it to the gym today, and did Day 1 of the 30-Day Shred.  Pretty decent workout.  I'm going to add a filter to talk about it, so comment on this post if you would like to be added.

The Yuletide tag-set is almost ready for nominations time, although this year the issue seems to be whether or not to let Gwen Stacy in and mis-modding of some comics fandom.  I don't have a dog in the fight, but I think it would probably be best if apologies were made, mistakes were admitted, and she was let in.

 DV
desertvixen: (YT optional details are optional)
Not sure what the final stats on fandoms and characters is, but there is a pretty good mix of stuff.  There's also an error with the tag set that has caused some entertaining moments.

 BOOKS:
Yuletide is the only place Heyer, Baby-Sitters Club, Nancy Drew, Juniper Mackenzie, Miss Marple, and the Rihannsu come together, except on my bookshelf... )

CARTOONS

For me, cartoons and Yuletide mean it's time for a trip to the 1980s.  Fandoms in this year include Lion Voltron, Thundercats (original and reboot), He-Man and She-Ra, Jem (not a full enough character set for my taste), and Dungeons and Dragons.  Jonny Quest is also in (without the main character), and the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc, which I still have not seen.

MOVIES

There is a good assortment of movies, mostly stuff that I think I'll be interested in reading, not so much writing or offering.  But when it comes up it will be fun!

Clue has a pretty good character set (everyone except the bodies) and there's a request I'm sort of flirting with making.  I don't know if I could write for it, but this might be the year we see.  It's one of the movies I brought with me, so I can always reference it.

The Eagle (movie, not book) is in, as well as A League of Their Own, The Cutting Edge, The Mummy, Murder by Death (exciting! not enough characters!), The Thin Man, and Tangled (where, by a rather amusing error, Tiphaine Rutherton from Emberverse shows up...).

TV

There's an interesting assortment of things that I might enjoy reading in here, but not so much with the writing.  MASH, Brisco County, 1957 Zorro, Murder She Wrote, a lot of the mystery/detective stuff, including Columbo.  Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew TV series was nominated, but apparently by a Hardy Boys fan because Nancy does not appear.  Glad I didn't nominate them.

OTHERS

Disney Princesses is a perennial favorite, and Hell's Kitchen RPF might be fun to read.  Maybe write depending on the prompt...

I am really looking forward to Yuletide this year!

 DV
desertvixen: (nancy not my day)
Stupid oversight.  The last few days have featured sleeping about as late as I can manage, probably due to lingering after-effect of the flu shot.

Also could be blamed on the fact that I was reading posts in the post about fixing errors in nominations later than I should have been.

However, I plan to post twice today, so that will make up for it.

There is football today, but since AFN is affected by the shutdown, we won't be seeing it.  Complaining about it feels really petty, so I'll leave it at that.  Right now, more worried about the whole debt ceiling thing because while the "Pay Our Military Act" affected shutdown-related loss of pay, the debt ceiling screws us again.  At least that's the message I'm getting from what we're seeing.

Oh, and I'm also procrastinating on homework.

Day 4

Oct. 5th, 2013 11:40 am
desertvixen: (TGIF)
Friday.  Anxiously awaiting the opening of the Yuletide tagset. ETA: It's OPEN! Squeeing will commence tomorrow.

I posted on [livejournal.com profile] lkh_lashouts for a change.  I couldn't resist reading and flogging just a little...especially since Amazon will let you return Kindle titles within 7 days.

I tried reading 2 other books from this month's 3.99 or less deals, both disappointing.

There is apparently a limit to the amount of highlights that can be stored on your Kindle.  I know because I hit it.

I haven't said much about the shutdown, since I'm not being affected as much as some.  We're getting our pay.

Day 2

Oct. 3rd, 2013 09:17 am
desertvixen: (thimble pricks)
Not letting events conspire to make me fall off the blogging wagon on Day 2.

Flu shot and work issues are not fun making.

 The tagset is still closed.

 From [livejournal.com profile] yuletide_admin:
On a general status note, we have 3424 fandoms in the tag set and 14,544 characters at the moment. We're down to 229 nominations to review, mostly small fandoms and fandoms on the border of eligibility, with a handful of fast growing fandoms that we're holding off on making decisions on.

I have a review of reading that I don't want to write for school.

Day 1

Oct. 2nd, 2013 08:31 am
desertvixen: (Initial D)
Trying to do the whole "blog every day of the month" challenge for October.  We will see how it goes.

Yuletide tagset is still having glitches, apparently.  Hopefully they can get things resolved quickly because I am really looking forward to it this year.

I bought a truly horrible $.99 Regency for the Kindle that is not only being returned (I truly love the policy where you can return it within 7 days) but getting a bad review.  It's not just stupid, it's also poorly edited and anachronistic. It's called Lord Tristan's True Love by Kymber Lee.  Avoid it.

And it's flu shot time, yay!  I have to head into work early to get mine out of the way.

DV
desertvixen: (Initial D)
From [livejournal.com profile] yuletide_admin:
There are still 686 noms to be sorted.
There are 3069 fandoms and 13115 characters approved!

All 4 of my nominations are good, but we are apparently in one of the intermittent periods in which the tagset is closed to fix issues.

DV
desertvixen: (Initial D)
The usual last-minute pondering of changing Yuletide noms is upon us... don't think I'm going to, but for some reason the idea of fic about Lady Fanny Marling (These Old Shades) is in my head.  Nothing distinct, as for the others I'm thinking about.

I really wish tag-sets were viewable during nominations.  I would dither less if I could see what was on the table.

 DV
desertvixen: (deadline and screwed)
So I know I said there was no point in waiting to nominate.... but I still haven't done mine.

Looking at the entry on LJ where people are putting what they have nominated, and I see so many that only need one more character for what I like!

I do not like not being able to see what's nominated through the process - I get that it's work intensive, but decisions would be easier if I knew what was already golden.

 DV
desertvixen: (Initial D)
It's still the 15th, but when I wake up tomorrow after shift, it will be far enough into the 16th that nominations should be open.

Unfortunately, this year, they will not be reviewing nominations throughout, but at the end...meaning we can't see what's already been nommed.

So there's no point in really waiting to nominate.  I have one request out in the nomination planning post, because suddenly I need more characters!

DV
desertvixen: (Initial D)
So, of course it wouldn't be the lead-up to Yuletide without a little drama.

New mods, new guidelines in an attempt to keep the madness down a little bit, and people who don't volunteer complaining about how the people who are running it are running it.

Nominations for Yuletide (4 fandoms, 4 characters) open on the 16th.  Trying to figure my noms out.

They are going to require that people make 4 requests (possible 5 and 6, but req 4) and 5 offers (up to 10) to widen the pool.  I'm looking forward to it.

 DV
desertvixen: (detroit meets voltron)
Football season has started with the Lions 1-0.  This makes me happy.  There were a lot of good games yesterday.

I also introduced [livejournal.com profile] desert_sdwndr to the "Football on your Phone" commercial by the Manning boys.  Good times.

The actual nomination planning post is up in yuletide, so I'm going to read that tomorrow.  No time today because I slept too late (due to not being able to fall asleep, grrr)

First week of class with assignments turned in, so we will see how the grading went.  A little nervous.  One, since it's Women's Studies, they want APA format and that gives me a headache.  Even using the Purdue OWL site, it's still painful.  Chicago/Turabian may be complicated, but I a) am used to it and b) have citation types saved.  However, definitely enjoying the conversations in class.

Also: has anyone seen any Dungeons and Dragons (Cartoon) icons about anywhere on LJ?  I need one.
