It's Combined Federal Charities (CFC) time again, which means it's time for me to figure out how much money I'll have taken out of my paycheck for charitable organizations by allotment. I try to mix it up with at least one new organization a year, which isn't hard given the scope of the book of eligible charities.
2011's charities are:
Ovarian Cancer Research Fund - This one is a personal concern for me, because we have family members who've had it, and I fear it more than I do getting breast cancer. Add into it the fact that my maternal grandmother, my mother, and my mother's sister have all needed hysterectomies, and you'll understand why I wish the teal ribbon was as ubiquitous as the pink ribbon.
Women in Military Service Memorial - This supports the Women in Military Service Memorial at the entrance to Arlington, and it's important to me because it helps honor the entire picture of women's military service.
Cheetah Conservation Fund - I decided to try something different for the big cats (yes, my weakness) and go with this one for a year.
Alley Cat Allies - This one is a perennial recipient of money from me.
Siamese Cat Rescue Center - I've donated to individual rescues, but not to the blanket organization. As long time readers of the LJ know, I had some internal debate over buying the current Rulers of my House as opposed to going through a shelter, but... I really hate shelters. They make me sick and upset me for days. It's silly, but it really bothers me, so I avoid them. The MV wants "kittens", which we're NOT going to have, but I'm starting to weigh the idea of getting a third cat. Penelope and Hector are both five years old now, and I think they would be okay with an addition. We'll be having feline company for a month or two (holding onto cats for friends who are relocating here) so we'll see how that goes.
