Day 12

Oct. 13th, 2013 08:42 am
desertvixen: (smart = sexy)
I had to skip a day due to a change in the work schedule and talking with [livejournal.com profile] desert_sdwndr a little too long.

I am not doing all that great on time today, either - priorities are Yuletide nominations, paper that's due on Sunday, and trying to read the free LKH story so I can snark on it.

The new Yahoo Mail is not user-friendly - apparently it did not occur to some that there is a reason why we've stuck with Yahoo and not gone Gmail?  It's annoying because some of the features do not show up at work, which is where I read most of my email.

Day 10

 Still pondering YT noms.

And not getting up early enough to write anything insightful on here.

Day 8

Oct. 9th, 2013 09:03 am

Happy, because I went to the gym.
Annoyed, because I forgot about something I had wanted to attend.

Yuletide signups are OPEN!  There's a week, so I plan to dither for a day or two, then look at the list of signups and make final decisions.

Day 3

Gym did not happen today.  However, I did sleep quite a bit more than yesterday, and am back to feeling like a non-flu-shot-coma person.

Tomorrow is my late day, which will be nice.

Day 2

Oct. 3rd, 2013 09:17 am
desertvixen: (thimble pricks)
Not letting events conspire to make me fall off the blogging wagon on Day 2.

Flu shot and work issues are not fun making.

 The tagset is still closed.

 From [livejournal.com profile] yuletide_admin:
On a general status note, we have 3424 fandoms in the tag set and 14,544 characters at the moment. We're down to 229 nominations to review, mostly small fandoms and fandoms on the border of eligibility, with a handful of fast growing fandoms that we're holding off on making decisions on.

I have a review of reading that I don't want to write for school.

Friday

I like Friday.  It's my lazy day.

Enjoying some of the contents of my care package (yummy chipses!) and relaxing with my roommate.

I broke down and bought a) the faster Internet as well as going back to the paid LJ account and extra userpics.  So now I have space to make/pick up some more.  Only first I have to organize the ones on my computer so I know what I haven't uploaded yet.  First task on Sunday will be making an updated icon of the MV (who is getting to be less and less "mini").

DV (happy to have all her icons back!)

So, as usual, long time no post.  I've been more active on FB, but haven't made it over here so much.

I will try to be better.

We're fairly well settled in the house, books have been unpacked, vacuum cleaner lost by movers has been replaced, cats have shed  fur on everything they can and discovered all the good places to sun themselves.

MV is finished with kindergarten and is going to visit her father in four days.  We are very excited.  I get to see PB in four days and am very excited about that.

I have been reading a lot, and hope to start writing more.

So....

Yuletide recs may not make it up before the reveal, and I haven't had time to read anything in Yuletide Madness.

I have stuff for [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking to knock out.

We got back early this morning after waayyy too long in the car.

Still have Christmas gifts to open.

I'm getting ready to serve the final dinner of the year (homemade spaghetti sauce).

The furballs have decided not to be mad about their temporary lack of people so no kitty cold shoulder.

 DV
desertvixen: (YT optional details are optional)
My Yuletide noms are in (with one tiny thing that I hope isn't an issue when we're doing requests - it wouldn't let me request Frank Hardy as part of Nancy Drew's character set) !

Please be aware that the nominating phase will end Monday night, so get your nominations in!

Signups will happen during this next week, so keep an eye on the Yuletide comms for news!  I am happy that we can start getting ready for the party now.

Anyway, I nominated the following:

Heyer's Unknown Ajax (Anthea Darracott, Mrs. Darracott, Lady Aurelia, and Hugo Darracott, since one of my requests is going to be for a Darracott female centric story) - I just got my pretty trade edition of this one and had fun reading it again.

Nancy Drew (Nancy, Helen Corning, Carson, and Bess - hoping for another female centric story) - I know, you're totally shocked here.

Dungeons and Dragons (cartoon) (Eric, Sheila, Presto, and Varla) because no one has nommed it yet and I wrote a lot of D&DC last time around.

Now, off for some homework.  :(

 No book discussion.

I have duty tomorrow night so I'll be on LJ a lot, I predict.  Assuming my students aren't too stupid - which, with this group, might be expecting too much.

I also have to have "big sister" time with the females and talk about all the girly aspects of being in the Army, and you know, not letting them get in the way of being a soldier.

I am trying the "blog entry every day in November" deal.

I'm going to make it easier on myself by talking about one of my favorite topics - books and reading.  That will kick off tomorrow, because tonight I am doing some book-related organization.

I am not doing NaNo this year.  I have the college class and it's going to be Yuletide writing really soon now.

Life in the Lair continues pretty much as normal.  The MV is very active and enjoying kindergarten.  Hector and Penelope spend their days shedding, sleeping, and trying to convince me of their lack of food.  The relationship with PB continues along nicely, despite the whole work factor.

I visited the dentist today, and I can almost feel my whole face again.  They gave me the Novocaine around 1240 and I still have numbness.

Is Facebook down for everyone else?  It's hard to kill time and pretend I'm working on my paper without it.

Maybe they're ... improving it again?

So, I got on snopes.com because I've read one too many "bad chain letters now updated to be Facebook status messages" and lost about an hour of my shift...

The current one floating around about "Amy Bruce", the seven year old with cancer is not true.  What's next, the damn the chocolate chip cookie recipe?

Make A Wish has a page about it not being true here.

Snopes article here.

At least it has kept pace with the times and the amount is 7 bucks, not 7 cents.

 Do I

 a) get ahead on my readings for class and start working on the assignment prior to this weekend ?
 b) start reading the new JD Robb book when I have a chance or wait until Sunday when the guy has duty ?

DV

Go here to help friends of mine.

Working mom struggling with health issues needs help with heat.  Kat ([livejournal.com profile] fire_and_a_rose ) tells the story better than I can.

Help if you can?

DV

Waiting for the notification that they have pushed the new code so Yuletide signups don't make everything all crashy, and studying my list of fandoms.

I managed to finish off both the chapter (so it's off with my beta) and the Nora Roberts book (much squeeing and rereading).  Now I'm working on the next chapter and successfully avoiding my history reading.

So now it's time to work on the next chapter and do a little photo organizing...

What sort of prop would help you recognize a character from Greek mythology as Penelope?

Here's the costume I have (characterized as Hera):

The only things I could think of were a) sitting at a loom, which is sort of constricting at a party or b) having about 20 guys in Greek getup annoying me.

It's Combined Federal Charities (CFC) time again, which means it's time for me to figure out how much money I'll have taken out of my paycheck for charitable organizations by allotment.  I try to mix it up with at least one new organization a year, which isn't hard given the scope of the book of eligible charities.

2011's charities are:

Ovarian Cancer Research Fund - This one is a personal concern for me, because we have family members who've had it, and I fear it more than I do getting breast cancer.  Add into it the fact that my maternal grandmother, my mother, and my mother's sister have all needed hysterectomies, and you'll understand why I wish the teal ribbon was as ubiquitous as the pink ribbon.

Women in Military Service Memorial - This supports the Women in Military Service Memorial at the entrance to Arlington, and it's important to me because it helps honor the entire picture of women's military service.

Cheetah Conservation Fund - I decided to try something different for the big cats (yes, my weakness) and go with this one for a year.

Alley Cat Allies - This one is a perennial recipient of money from me.

Siamese Cat Rescue Center - I've donated to individual rescues, but not to the blanket organization.  As long time readers of the LJ know, I had some internal debate over buying the current Rulers of my House as opposed to going through a shelter, but... I really hate shelters.  They make me sick and upset me for days.  It's silly, but it really bothers me, so I avoid them.  The MV wants "kittens", which we're NOT going to have, but I'm starting to weigh the idea of getting a third cat.  Penelope and Hector are both five years old now, and I think they would be okay with an addition.  We'll be having feline company for a month or two (holding onto cats for friends who are relocating here) so we'll see how that goes.

I'm still alive.  I'm just trapped in AIT land, with my 70-80 hour work week.  I am planning a "Day in the Life" post, but I'd have to make time to sit down and write it.

The MV continues her campaign for world domination through cuteness.

My Siamese overlords cope with my work schedule by taking frequent naps and practicing their starved kitty act.

I promise an actual substantive update this weekend, complete with pictures.

 DV
desertvixen: (where's frank?)
 Things to work on tomorrow:

 1. Edit pictures.

 2. Post pictures.

 3. Decide what pictures to order from Ritz, because they're probably wondering if I've dropped off the face of the planet.

 4. Place said order.

 5. Complete the "she's awesome!" meme.

 6. Vacuum.
