desertvixen: (deadline)

So, apparently I haven't written about my stories since last Yuletide... This will be a long one.

For Crossovering 2017, I wrote a Wonder Woman/Fantastic Beasts crossover, Consequences of War.  Mildly annoyed because the recipient never bothered to comment on it.

For Darkest Night 2017 I did 2 stories.  One was a ST TOS story focusing on McCoy and Spock dealing with the Mirror, Mirror episode, called He Walks in Dreams.  The second one was based on Sophocles' Antigone, and is called To Please The Dead.  In keeping with the challenge, it is dark and features rape/non-con elements and major character death.

I did two for Fandom Giftbox 2017 (excellent low-stress exchange much like Fandom Stocking).
She Also Serves focuses on Uhura duirng ST III.
Sending His Love Home deals with Penric and increasing separation from his family.

 For GenEx 2017 I did 2 stories.
My assignment was Room to Grow, a Hill Street Blues fic featuring Frank and Faye Furillo.
I also did an Aral & Miles fic called Fathers and Sons about Miles getting swimming lessons pre-reconcilation with Piotr.

Unconventional Courtship 2017 was not an exchange, but an assignment.  The idea is to write an AU based on a romance novel blurb.  I decided to combine Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys with Paula Marshall's The Wolfe's Mate.  The story is Right Dress, Wrong Girl

For Alternate Universe Exchange 2017, I did Duel at Troy, which set various Trojan War characters at a Regency House party (the worst!  it's gone on forever...) focused on Achilles and Penthesilea.  One of my more comic stories.

For The Exchange at Fic Corner 2017, I did two stories.  My assignment was a Cherry Ames story, Cherry Ames Returns to Spencer, that focuses on Cherry and a few friends becoming instructors.  My pinch hit was a Westing Game story, Master of the Game, focused on Sam Westing.

For Rare Pair Fest 2017, I did two stories.  My assignment was My Love Gone to War, an Anne of Green Gables story focused on Jem/Faith set during Rilla of Ingleside.  I also did Love Turned to Hate, a Clytemnestra/Agamemnon piece about how the relationship might have soured.

For Not Prime Time 2017, I did 2 stories.  My assignment was The Message, a Rogue One AU in which Lyra Lives!  And she is not pleased.  I also did a pinch hit called Third Time's The Charm, which is Ivan-centric.

I did a few for Multifandom Drabble 2017.
Magic is Jacob/Queenie from Fantastic Beasts and provides a sweet moment.
Fly Free and Not Again are also Fantastic Beasts and deal with Newt and some of his creatures.

For Night on Fic Mountain, I did a G.I. Joe cartoon story that's different from my usual, because it focuses on Falcon, called Playing Games, plus bonus 80s references.

For All in the Family, I did a story focused on Newt Scamander and Luna Lovegood (since she is married to his grandson) called Finding Friends...and Family.  It also got translated into Russian!.  Then I did a pinch hit for G.I. Joe cartoon called Brotherhood and a snippet called Not Alone, both focused on Duke and Falcon.

For Jukebox 2017, I did It's Just Our Style, based on Style by Taylor Swift.

For Once Upon a Fic 2017, I did Fateful Meeting, an Odysseus/Penelope fanfic set during the "suitors besieging Tyndareus" stage.  I also did a Little Red Riding Hood take called To Walk in the Woods, featuring a Huntswoman.

I did several for May The Fourth Be With You 2017.  One is Training Value, in which Wedge and Luke have some fun with trainees.  Enough for Now features a quiet Cassian/Jyn moment.  Destiny is an AU where Luke stays on Dathomir with Teneniel Djo (and yes, I was pretty irritated when I discovered how they ended her story).  Make It Home is an Rogue One AU where everyone doesn't die.

For Chocolate Box - Round 2, I did a few stories.  Climb is a Rogue One canon-compliant Cassian introspection piece.  To Set Sail with Old Friends is an AU Jack-Beverly-Jean Luc threesome version of ST TNG's first few eps.  Memory Loss is a TNG missing piece focused on Crusher/Picard.  Brothers is a Vorkosigan Saga piece focused on Miles and Mark.  Good of You to Come is a TNG canon-compliant piece going straight to the Department of Angsty Back Story for Picard/Crusher.

For Fandom Stocking 2016, I did several pieces.
The Test focuses on Beverly Crusher and the bridge officer test.
Wishes is a Ro Laren piece set during Preemptive Strike.
In Their Hands focuses on Uhura touring the Enterprise-D (like the scene in Encounter at Farpoint with McCoy).
Missing deals with Wesley Crusher finally going to the Academy.
 Exploration
shows Uhura on an away mission.
Recovery is a follow-on to "After Looking in the Mirror" with a TOS Spock/Uhura focus.  Realization could also follow that story, and establishes that all ship's doctors are nosy.
 Celebration
is a Star Wars drabble.
Playing by the Rules features another "shore leave on K7" incident for the TOS Enterprise crew.
On Her Terms is a T'Pring drabble.
Rest and Relaxation is an Alys/Simon piece for Vorkosigan fans.
Midnight Snack is a BSC story focusing on Sam & Stacey.  Not really shippy...
The Magic of a Kiss is a full-size BSC story focusing on Charlie Thomas/Mary Anne Spier...with a side of Sleeping Beauty.
Wedding Planning is a BSC story that follows my tradition of doing "wedding theme" stories for Fandom Stocking, Charlie/Janine.

His Little Princess is a Voltron (1980s version) story done for a blind exchange for the KAEX (Keith/Allura ship focused group).

For this Yuletide, I wrote 5 stories (assignment and 4 pinch hits) for the main collection and 4 stories for Madness.

Games Aren't Always Fun is a Dungeons and Dragons Cartoon fic, Eric-centric. I got a cool prompt and the recipient loved it, so everyone was happy. I wanted to do something a little shippier for it, but it just didn't flow that way.

Just A Quiet House Party is a Hercule Poirot and Captain America crossover, likely AU. Of course Captain Hastings, he reads about the exploits of Captain America... I enjoyed doing a Poirot crossover (why I jumped on it) and the recipient enjoyed it.

Journey to A New World is a Nantucket fanfic focused on Kashtiliash and Kathryn Hollard. I'm afraid the recipient wasn't too shocked to find out I wrote it...because I've written all the fic in the Archive for this pair. But they loved it and I enjoyed it and oh no, please don't make me read the book again...

Dearer Than Any Blood Sister is a Gone With The Wind fic that's Melanie-intropection and a little defense of Scarlett. The recipient enjoyed it, and I enjoyed writing on a pretty wide-open prompt.

Unwritten is a Back to the Future fanfic that imagines the impact the time travel had on Marty and his decisions. I enjoyed writing it, the recipient liked it, and I think of the 5, it has been the most popular.

I really appreciated that there wasn't a repeat of last year, where the recipient never acknowledged the story.

For Madness:

Fix The Future is a Back to the Future drabble - Biff Tannen is running for President... look, I think after this year, a little comic relief is warranted and this one appears to have gone over well.

Queen of Babylon is a Nantucket drabble about the Islander sushi bar.

What Morning Will Bring is a DDC drabble.

Relief is a Penric double drabble about Penric's issues with his new occupant.

My assignment ended up being Nancy Drew and the Hassled Heiress, for the 1930s Nancy Drew fans.  The recipient really enjoyed it, and left me a lovely compliment.  As for the alliterative title, I may have been watching too much Perry Mason.  This case involves the aforementioned hassled heiress, a greedy relative, and a house with a secret.

I also did an initial pinch hit for the Vorkosigan Saga called To Dance Again, featuring Lady Alys Vorpatril and her memories of dancing...and her hopes of the future.  Several known names seem to have found it, so I'm super happy to be able to claim it.

Recs:

1.  Left Unspoken (Captain America movies) - Okay, if you totally felt like Cap 2 was setting us up for Steve/Natasha and then were totally frustrated by the lack of follow-thru (and the whole Natasha/Bruce thing), then this is a story for you.  It's by the same person who wrote the really awesome Let The Water Wash You Clean, and... just read it.  Assumes that everyone on Steve's side went with him.  Story has spoilers for Captain America: Civil War.

He’d always suspected Nat and Clint had ways of talking to each other that didn’t involve telephones or other usual means. And Sam was right that he wouldn’t have gone eighty-four days without at least finding out if she were okay. And the other way around too.

Steve’s patience was gone. “God dammit, Clint, I’m not going to have you tell her I love her in a coded message from you!”

There's some Steve/Bucky stories, a Steve/Peggy story, and a Steve/Maria Hill story as well.

2. Persephone Departs (Greek/Roman Mythology) - A lovely piece about Persephone, the Queen of the Underworld, leaving her mother in the autumn.  The language in this is lovely.

3. Feather on the Nile (The Mummy series) - If you ever thought Ardeth should hook up with Rick and/or Evie... yeah, you need to read this.  It's quite nice, sensual without being explicit.

Ardeth understands only too well why O’Connell would forsake all others for this woman, if she looked at him as she looks at O’Connell, he’s certain he would too. The knowledge passes between them that they would burn cities for this girl if she asked. Better for both of them that her hunger is for knowledge rather than treasure.

“Are you dying?” Evy asks, voice utterly serious, “I’d like to think you’d tell me if the world was ending after everything we’ve been through but it’s worth asking anyway? Because I’ve been kissed by a desperate and doomed man before and I know what that feels like. Ardeth, what’s wrong?”

4. Victory Dance (Star Wars Original Trilogy) - A Leia/Han/Lando piece set at the Endor celebration.  Not my usual taste, but good.  Not super explicit, but descriptive.

Instead, to her surprise, he pulls her in closer for a second kiss, gentler and quicker than the first, then lets her go, gives her a wink, and turns to Han to say in tones of mock complaint, "See, now she knows how to welcome a guy home from a suicide mission."

So, I had a much better Yuletide, writing-wise, than I did in 2012 or 2011.
14 stories in 11 fandoms, by yours truly )

So, overall, I wrote 14 stories in 11 fandoms (1 double), in which 5 of them were new fandoms.  Pretty happy with that.

I can't wait for next year!  In the meantime, there are New Year's Resolutions to think about writing.
