 Perhaps, having read the Anita Blake novels first, my expectations were simply too high. - from a review on Amazon of Nightseer, Laurell K. Hamilton's first novel.

 Considering how the series has gone downhill, that made me laugh quite a bit.

Was she every really uphill? I remember reading the first Anita Blake book and thinking it was okay, but not as good as my wife was raving about.

Then again, since my favorite author is Bujold, my standards of characterization are unreasonably high.

I seem to recall loving that one, but I was going through my EMO HEROINE OF AWESOME stage. Having tried to re-read it a few years ago, it... does not hold up. I didn't actually manage to finish it.
