I Just Can't Resist...
Apr. 23rd, 2012 08:21 am So, I have been seeing the writer's block/feature of the week thing about fanfic all week, and trying to ignore it. Authorial disapproval isn't going to stop it, although most of my stuff isn't based on books by a single REAL author anyway (Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys of course are products of the Stratemeyer syndicate, and most of my other stuff is cartoons...). The authors I enjoy who prefer that no fanfic be written of their work aren't really the people who I feel I could write fanfic about.
However, I would like to point out that to George R.R. Martin that at least when fanfic authors drag out a huge, long, complicated saga that requires its own spreadsheet to keep track of everyone and who has stabbed who in the back, that features moments of misogny so creepy I want to throw the book across the room and wash my hands AND my poor bookshelf, and who decide they are going to take their own sweet time to finish a story and string us along (and yes, I'm guilty of taking a long time to finish stories)...
... at least fanfic authors aren't CHARGING their readers for the torture. Most of us do it for the enjoyment we get, as well as the people who read us.
I have read the first three books in his series, and had to stop. Partly because I don't really enjoy series where EVERYONE is ALWAYS on the damn chopping block, partly because some of the things he writes in for his female characters are just over-the-top humiliation for something I'm reading for entertainment, and partly because I came to the realization that Ned Stark was the luckiest character in the whole damn series, and I'm not willing to play along for God only knows how long just to see if certain people get what is coming to them.
