I went and recieved my award today, for helping pull off the Army Birthday Ball. Yes, the one we threw in June. :)

Also went and accomplished one of my required four language hours for the month, so I feel all accomplished. Then I got to play Fun Organizational Games for the holiday party my unit is throwing. After the Physical Therapy appt this afternoon (is it still screwed up? can you cut now before I lose any more running time?), I'm relaxing.

Of course, I get to go in this evening to a) sell tickets for the Holiday Ball and b) counsel a soldier. Yay! NCO life!

Car trouble: turned out to be a refurbished cheap batetry, courtesy of my dealership. Ancira/Winton, here in San Antonio. GRRR. The nice guys at Midas put in a new battery and did the electrical systems check, just to be sure. They even gave me a military discount.

Have to go in early today and teach a fun class on POSH (prevention of sexual harassment) for the people who missed the 7 other go round of the class... I also have to sell tickets for the holiday ball.

Again, apologies to everyone who had to read the joeland post that was intended for phax only. :)

Looking forward to shiftchange in 2 days (NOT). Yeah, it's going to be real easy to go from staying up until 12-1 in the morning to getting up at 0330 to go to PT.

More later.

Good news: I signed my extension paperwork today. I now get out of the Army on 22 Apr 07, so I have enough time to take the class to change jobs. I'll be reenlisting for longer after I complete the class and get promoted to SGT. This next reenlistment will put me over halfway, so I've pretty much committed to the Army for 20.

Bad news: They're jacking my pay up again.

Worse news: They're jacking Brian's promotion to E6 around. It won't happen this month. It may not happen next month if they raise the points. I'm a little worried and a lot pissed.

December is getting crowded fast, but I am going to try to keep turning out some writing. Electra fans fear not. :)

Thinking about going warrant officer after I've been doing the 96B job for awhile, as there are better career options, and honestly, better money options. Warrant officer married to warrant officer (Brian is already in application mode) is good money. We're motivated by the desire to be of use to the country a lot, but there's also the wish to have a family, and to be able to give our family what they deserve to have.

Hoping they get me that date soon....

Mondays suck.
I think this is probably a universal constant, like gravity.

Rainy all day, which equals a lethargic DV. I just can't get moving when it's gray and rainy and gloomy, unless of course my husband is there... but let's not go there.

I took myself to the gym like a good girl, did PT, and then they closed the gym due to inclement weather. They let me finish showering first. Annoyance #1: I forgot a regular bra, had to wear my less sweaty sports bra, cause I cannot go without. Head into work massively early, leading to Annoyance #2: soaked BDU pants and AC environment at work. BRRR! As for work, well, it was Monday. Enough said.

Highly annoyed that my husband is not getting promoted this month due to a f***ing admin oversight. It's quite a bit of money, and not for sure that he'll make it the next month if they raise the points.

Come home, and have to read an entirely screwed up post in the women_warriors community. blue_phoenix, if you have not checked out the post, DO SO NOW. (And be sure to check out the post where the one navy person suggests she scrap the "nudie pictures") There are some people who should not be joining my military, and this is one.

sykoamazon, I am not in any of the Army Training Pics because I was taking them. I'll slap an in-uniform pic of me up in the joeland folder.

Jenn, your beta's back in your inbox. Glad to see someone's creative muse working. Mine seems to have gone on a TDY.

BTW, thanks to dj_celica for the new icons. One of which is in use tonight.

Watching the Wolverines beat the Buckeyes (at least I hope the trend continues as the game progresses) and doing domestic chores.

Our Army Training was actually fun today. Got muddy, but not too bad, and proved that yes, I actually know stuff that is useful. Granted, a 10 person squad is a little unwieldy, but we managed it. One of our unit's staff sergeants did a really good performance of a shell shock victim. I'll post pics when I get them developed (yes, I still use that FILM thing).

Then I went back and took pictures and performed the usual role of the junior noncommissioned officer known as Corporal - in short, whatever the more senior NCOs need done.

Now I'm home, and continuing to clean out the hard drive, and hoping to get some writing inspiration here.

OOh! Work

Trying to get the false motivation going here, but it's not working. Especially with the nasty gray weather outside.

We had some fun with tornados and heavy rainstorms last night, including encounter with Annoying Government Civilians ("We don't have to listen to you military peons..." Look buddy, I'm not telling you you can't go outside for kicks, I'm telling you because the base is locked down. ARRGH!)

I'm really hoping that this weather stops being so ugly, because we have to go do Army stuff outside Saturday morning, and this little Corporal really dislikes being wet/cold. Hot is fine, but the other... ick.

Hopefully, I can not be in such a bitchy mood when I go in today, but I'm not making promises.

Then, last night, had one of those "military couple" moments. My husband misplaced his tie for his Class A uniform, and asked me if perhaps, it was hiding out in the same bag as his dress blues. It wasn't, but I got mildly depressed taking his blues out of the bag to check, since the last time I saw him in them, we were having our actual wedding. Sometimes this separation thing really bites.

Random thought : I wonder how many people who were offended by the MNF intro were bothered not just by the "raciness" but by the black football player / white woman factor? Yeah, it was a little surprising when they did it (in light of the whole Janet Jackson at halftime thing), but I can't say I was offended.

Aaah, the last day of my shift and a party to go to, as soon as I can weasel my way out of work. We're saying goodbye (sort of - they aren't actually leaving the area yet, but they are leaving the military) to a pair of our coworkers who found love amidst the torture of our respective jobs. (I'm one to talk, as I did the same thing, over three years ago.) Brave friends of ours who just moved into a house are hosting the event, so I've claimed my patch of floor. I'll even have my own personal furry warming units, as their cats think I am an "auntie".

Slithered out of bed to watch GameDay on ESPN and watch the Georgia-Auburn game. The guys like it when someone comes into work and knows the scores.

Off for Sunday and Monday, with plans to laze around and catch up on stuff. Monday, of course, will be spent poking surreal_phantast with a sharpened stick to "help her along" with the writing process. It's a poor woman's version of a retreat.

Still waiting on my paperwork with a class date for the reclass, although now we know that it will go through, because the people who told me no are incompetent beyond belief. Of course, we knew this. When I get a date, I'll have to start thinking about what of my stuff will go with me for the four months of training. Guess it's a good thing I popped for a CD Burner/DVD player for the PC.

And in cheerful news, my husband actually will be visiting for 5 whole days at Christmas !! It says something about the state of our relationship, or rather the limits enforced on us by an incredibly slow moving Army, that I am so thrilled about this. That'll make it only 2.5 months since the last time we saw each other.

K, so maybe this is a not-so-short update.

>>start reading my new hardcover (David Weber, Shadow of Saganami) - probably at work to prevent dying of boredom.>>

Managed to get some read. It's a little slow but not being plagued by the huge InfoDump at the beginning of the last one.

>>Still waiting to see if DA (Dept of the Army) is going to approve my reenlistment and bonus. Hopefully within the next week or two.>>

Still waiting. Now looks more like the end of the month. Overjoyed that I have the best platoon sergeant ever, and ready to slap people in retention. The issue that I was arguing (and my sergeant was arguing for me)? Guess who was right? And it wasn't a 'depends on how you interpret it' deal. Straight up, we were right and they were screwed up.

>>briefing and physical therapy appt on Monday morning>>

Briefing - okay. One of those "Meet the New Commander" briefings. 90 percent Army BS.

Physical Therapy. Yes, I definitely have a meniscus tear in the knee. However, because I can walk (or, if you've seen me lately, hobble), the USAF doctor wants to give it a month or two before saying, "Surgery time". Have to call and deal with evil appointment-making people at the hospital, because I need an alternate APFT event profile.

Is it a bad sign, if you're following your doctor's order to ice and elevate your knee and using a vodka bottle as your icepack? Hey, I have that in the freezer, and I don't have any ice.

>>It's Sunday, and that means football. Go Lions! (please?)>>

Not so much. However, the Cowboys got kicked, and that always helps make the day better.

DV
desertvixen: (Default)
Unfortunately, I spoke too soon about the Lions not sucking. Screw the Cowboys, anyway. Gratified (as a Democrat) to see the boys from Green Bay kick some tail in Washington against the Redskins, and happy for rookie Ben Roethlisberger in Pittsburgh. Wonder how far *they'll* get this season.

I watched my taped episode of Boston Legal - pretty good, overall. The opening was great, as were Denny (Shatner) and the scenes with the one judge. I am wondering if they're ever going to *do* anything with Brad (Mark Valley) or if he's just going to be the whipping boy for the rest of the cast. I hope they actually do something, since I rather like the whole clean-cut, straight-laced American guy thing. (Down, Jenn.) The bit with Monica Potter's character doing the murder defense was a good one too, although shades of Columbine.

Unfortunately (looks for sykoamazon, carefully), I haven't done much writing here lately. Too busy with the insanity of work and trying to reenlist while not being screwed over. A possible ray of light... but more on that when we actually find out.

It's Monday, but it's Friday! (The fellow shiftworkers here understand what I'm saying.) Unfortunately, I have to work all 8 hours, as my excuse to get away from work for a few hours developed a gutless streak. Another fun day with the day staff! Yay!

The false optimism thing isn't working, is it?

DV
desertvixen: (Default)
This is just not a good day.

I discovered that apparently I am not eligible for a bonus because I am considered a midcareer soldier and am not an E-5 (due to the fact that our promotions are stalled). I am seriously reconsidering whether or not I reenlist with this as a consideration. Not so much the money, but for the screwing over factor. Do I really want to sign on for more of this? Do I want to go through four months of class with people who are getting insane bonuses when I am getting nothing, never mind the fact that I outrank them?

I am seriously pissed. Especially since I just got a congratulatory letter from the branch manager. I was actually starting to look at possible new vehicles. I was starting to think about the things my husband and I could do with bonus money - like, a bedroom set. For when we have a bedroom together. We're trying to find some loophole. Keep your fingers crossed, please.

Also annoyed that I had to spend twenty dollars to exercise my constitutional right to vote, as my absentee ballot arrived today. Sent by Second Day mail to ensure it gets delivered by Monday. Of course, not voting is more expensive. And as I refuse to become a Texas resident (I prefer instead to be a Nevadan), it's a price worth paying.

Glad to see the Sox win. Maybe other ill-starred teams can suceed this year (GO Lions!). Hope springs eternal.

Day Off !!

Oct. 21st, 2004 11:52 pm

After this four day set of work, I'm finding the whole day off thing is quite nice. Of course, I spent all day today organizing stuff and running errands. Not to mention raiding the used book store, so now I'm set on reading material for awhile, hopefully. Especially with swings.

Of course, tommorrow involves Army stuff, after sleeping in - because now my sleep clock is all jacked up and I can't sleep until 2 am. Going to days is going to be hard, at this rate. Of course, I'll be going into work for awhile to handle squad-leader stuff at one in the morning, because that's when all my people will be there. Tomorrow also involves more scrapbook production. I have to cut down on the amount of loose, floating scrapbook supplies and photos before I get reassigned, giving the movers less of a chance to break my stuff. My nesting instinct seems to be kicking in...

Glad to see the Yankees went down, if for nothing else than because I always cheer for the underdog (what do you expect from a Detroit Lions fan?) and glad to see the Astros go down, because they're from Texas.

DV
desertvixen: (Default)
Well, after being at PT until *midnight* (and still quite humid, thanks much), I didn't manage to get to sleep until after 0100. Hopefully, this whole arrangement will only last for 2 weeks - unfortunately, it's going to feel like a very long 2 weeks. I predict continued crankiness.

In that light, decided to blow off Boring Army Briefing at 0730, as there are two more, equally inconvenient go-rounds I can attend. It always feels nice to sleep in. Managed to get some tidying up done before I turned the computer on, so I can feel like I accomplished something.

Wondering if anyone (besides surreal_phantast) read the conclusion of Weekend Leave, as no one has commented on it. I plan to go to work on EC 20 this "weekend" (Thurs and Friday).

Bitch, bitch, bitch....

DV
desertvixen: (Default)
Well, first the Lions lost to the Packers, 38-10. So I wasn't in a good mood before I headed off to work.

Where I discovered that the Army induced insanity only gets better and better. We now have mandatory accountability formations and PT before work. Apparently, someone in our company is a child masquerading as an adult, but unable to get the whole "being where you're supposed to be when you're supposed to be there" thing down. So we all get to jump through hoops.

Remember, there is a right way, a wrong way, and the Army way. :)

In fic news, I put up #19 of Electra and the conclusion to Weekend Leave. I have decided I'm not posting the next one in the BH/CG series until I finish the sucker, to avoid people wanting to lynch me for taking my sweet time. Glad so many people are reading the stuff, just wish more people were commenting on it, besides my ever-fervent beta reader surreal_phantast.

Bitch, bitch, moan, moan. It's going to be one of those weeks, I think.
