Jukebox 2021
Apr. 12th, 2021 10:33 amSo in case you didn’t pick up on the trend, 80s country music is one of my comfy places. It’s the music of my childhood, back in the day when you either played cassette tapes or were at the mercy of the radio. Feel free to invoke the 80s.
For Hank Williams Jr and David Allan Coe, I realize they both have some music that is questionable by today’s standards (especially Coe). I have not requested any of that music.
Feel free to mix any/all of these together if it makes you happy!
My DNW are graphic/explicit/sexual violence, cruelty to animals/children, nominated character death.
My general preferences are here.
Family Tradition - Hank Williams Jr. (Song)
I'd like the main character to be a woman, but feel free to keep the famous parent a father. Think 80s country glitz.
I love how much of a mess the main character in the song is, and would love to see it applied to a woman. Glitz, glamour, brash attitudes, bad decisions, bad choices in men, wild boots and rhinestones… go for it.
Like I said above, I realize that Hank Jr has some questionable music, but I feel like Family Tradition is not one of those songs. He’s also a much more talented musician than many realize. Feel free to play this angle up (plays multiple instruments, etc) but I am good with different attiudes.
The Ride - David Allan Coe (Song)
I love vanishing hitchhikers and this is a reverse. Please make main character female.
Pretty much what it says. I’m cool with the driver being Hank Williams, but love the idea of the passenger being a female country singer. OR…since Hank Williams died when his son was 4, if you wanted to cross this with Family Tradition, I’m totally on board for that. I want the interaction, and would love to see the singer looking back. Especially if they belatedly realize
the driver was their parent.
Pretty much this. Except it doesn’t have to be Hank Sr if you’d prefer to create your own character. But I love the impact of the line, You don’t have to call me mister mister/the whole world called me Hank. If you look at my past requests, I love vanishing hitchhikers.
River Bank - Brad Paisley (Song)
The part where they tell the boss to suck it and travel around the world on a cruise ship/yacht.
This is what I want:
Still, can you imagine if we ever struck it
I’d go shoot tequila, take a lime and suck it
And we’d tell our bosses they can do the same
We’ll find a big cruise ship and buy the whole dang thing
We’d sail around the world and go to shore in a dingy
If you wanted to cross this over with 9 to 5, I’m there for it! Or…if they use the strike to get back at the boss!
Or even just what is it like to live on the cruise ship? Maybe they find out there’s a (ghostly) reason the ship was relatively cheap.
Pretty much all of the above.
This is Country Music - Brad Paisley (Song)
So what I love about this song is how it brings a little history, but it also reflects more of my life than pop music. I know all the songs at the end by heart (was country when it wasn't cool)
Do you like to drink a cold one on the weekend and get a little loud
Do you want to say I'm sorry or I love you but you don't know how?
Do you wish somebody had the nerve to tell that stupid boss of yours
To shove it next time he yells at you?
Well this is country music and we do
So turn it on, turn it up, and sing along
This is real; this is your life in a song
Maybe a song about someone who works with music?
Do you want to say I'm sorry or I love you but you don't know how? – This one always speaks to me. But the nod to Take This Job and Shove It is good too. If you want to riff off any of the song titles in the tail, go for it!
Highwomen - The Highwomen (Song)
My favorite verses involve the healer and the Freedom Rider, but what I would really like is based on this:
We are The Highwomen
Singing stories still untold
We carry the sons you can only hold
We are the daughters of the silent generations
You sent our hearts to die alone in foreign nations
It may return to us as tiny drops of rain
But we will still remain
What stories might these silent generations tell? I’d be super interested in the perspective of an Army nurse or other female Soldier. (If you somehow want to cross this with Cherry Ames/nurses who were held at Bataan, I am COMPLETELY ON BOARD)
Pretty much what it says here.
What's Your Country Song - Thomas Rhett (Song)
I love how this pays homage to the older songs and acknowledges that country can be a lot of different things.
My faves:
Everybody got a small town anthem
Everybody got a story to tell
Everybody got a hallelujah
Everybody been through a little hell
When you're rolling down a two-lane highway
And you turn your radio on
Tell me which one hits you, baby
Yeah, what's your country song?
Were you already country
Back when country wasn't cool?
What's your family tradition?
What makes you turn it up
Makes you raise your cup every time you listen?
Pretty much what it says here!
9 to 5 - Dolly Parton (Song)
Modern update? I love the movie, I love the opening scene used as the video.
If you want to leave this in the 80s timeframe (or riff off the end scenes in the movie) go for it! If you want to update it for today’s gig economy and online work, go for it. Or if you want to update the revenge taken in the movie, I’m down for that too!
Just remember: They just use your mind and you never get the credit/It's enough to drive you crazy if you let it.
Nothing really to add here, but I love Dolly.
