desertvixen: woman reading a book (reading)

Spoilers Lurk!

It's going a little slowly, but I find the 5 Gods books do that. I think it's because there's still so much of this universe that we don't know, unlike the Vorkosigan books. Paladin of Souls went the fastest of the three, but I think that was because we had the background established in Curse of Chalion to work with.

Is there somewhere that she gives us a physical description of Ingrey, because I seem to have missed it. The few things she has dropped remind me strikingly of a younger Aral. Which, for much of LMB's female readership, is NOT a bad thing by any stretch of the word.

Learned Hallana - I like her so far, and hopefully we'll see her again later in this book. She would also be a good character for the Mother's book, IMO. The bit where she gives the guy the pig delusion is hilarious. ("You could feed him some bran mash." A couple of glances for the giggles from that one.) The bit where she talks about "shedding excess disorder" to keep the baby safe from the demon cracked me up as well. I wish I could cascade small amounts of chaos now and again. It might make me feel better.

I also like Ingrey's lieutenant, Gesca. But then, I have a soft spot in my heart for the man who follows orders even though they don't make any sense, whose loyalty guides him to do the right thing even if it doesn't seem like a good choice at the time. He seems to have a sense of humor, which is good. (I miss Foix from the two Chalionese books.)

The bit where we learn who Hallana married is also amusing.

Ingrey's enjoyment of dealing with people who try to bribe or threaten him got a good reaction, too. I like the hint of danger it conveys about him.

Gesca's confrontation of Ingrey over any feelings he may have for Ijada - classic. "Anyway, it was only one lover." The bit where Gesca is scared of what women say when we talk about men got a laugh.

The hunting/game metaphor is nicely drawn, but not bludgeon heavy.

Earl-Ordainer Horseriver. Yes, I'm still trying to figure out what his place is in the scheme of things, besides purveyor of back story.

The Bastard's saint seems intriguing. The bit with the ice bear was entertaining.

The bit with him freezing Gesca was not. The horror of both men is adequately expressed.

"You are my side. And you are not alone."
"Then," she breathed, "neither are you."

This, and the kiss it leads up into, is *incredible*. The quotes remind me strongly of Aral and Cordelia - "My home is not a place, sir. It is people."

The imagery is incredible.

You'll find the rest interesting.

I really like that Ingrey finally gets a book. Or, better put: I'm glad a not-too unconventional young man gets a major role. There haven't been many of those in Lois' writings. (Hmm.. Why don't Leo Graf or Ethan of Athos strike me as what I'm looking for. I guess Leo is too old, and Ethan not quite the occupation I'm looking for.
