Dear Fic Corner Scribbler Letter
Jun. 19th, 2015 10:39 pmDear Fic Corner Scribbler,
Thank you! I know I'll enjoy whatever you come up with, so I hope you enjoy it. I think I'm pretty easy to write for.
General Thoughts: For this one, I'd like to avoid too much angst and depression. There's one prompt that calls for some of that, and all of them really could include it - but just don't end with it. Bittersweet is good - hopelessly bleak is not. I picked "Mature" as the the highest level - doesn't need to be fade to black, but not super-explicit either. Not into non-con or dub-con. These prompts all deal with stories that take place in the past, so period-appropriate language and feelings are good.
On to the requests:
Little House on the Prairie - Laura, Almanzo, Cap Garland, Mary Power, Caroline Ingalls
Essentially, something to take away from the bad taste I get in my mouth when I read The First Four Years (or any of the Rose books, honestly). I always wished I had stopped reading at These Happy Golden Years, because the rest of her real life was depressing.
So give me a short story set in THGY/courtship days, or give me an AU where they stay near DeSmet and things work out better. No dead kids, no fire, no diptheria, no Rocky Ridge - hard work and setbacks are okay, but give them some more light and happiness. Maybe Laura teaches another school. I love Cap Garland as well, and you can toss in Mary Power - double courtships, perhaps? Or something with Laura and Caroline. I am good with all characters, but please include Laura. She was one of my first favorite characters, and remains one today.
Two-Minute Mysteries - Doanld J. Sobol - Dr. Haledjian, Octavia, Inspector Winters
So, like many people, I was first exposed to Dr. Haledjian and crowd through the Scholastic Book Club. I used to read them while in the car with my father, and we used to endlessly mock the "everyone knows" answers at the back of the book. I was always confused, because no one I knew did know the answers. I had my answer as an adult when I learned that the books were older than I was. But I still love them.
I'm interested mostly in the character actions "off-stage" as it were. If you want to write a TMM-worthy mystery to go with it, I'd love that too! I love the ones where it's the dialogue that trips people up. But what do these people DO when they're not solving these mysteries? How come everyone Haledjian knows wants to try out their pathetic attempts at crime frame-ups and concealing crimes? If you pick poor Octavia, how about letting her get through a dinner or other social occasion without Haledjian boring her to death? Or let her pull off a crime - or let Haledjian pull off a crime. If you want to somehow work in the fact that Haledjian is apparently Armenian/Armenian-American, go for it. I didn't have room to include the other recurring characters, but I'm good with folks like Mrs. Sydney and Cyril Makin - not so much Nick the Nose. Or work the crowd into a Clue sort of setting. There's a lot of ways you could take it, and I'd really be happy to see any of them!
In my head, these books take place in the yellow spine Nancy Drew era, or as someone else has phrased it, "frocks and luncheons".
The Bobbsey Twins - Nan Bobbsey, Nellie Parks, Dinah Johnson, Mary Bobbsey
Basic theme for this request: Bobbsey Girl Power.
Give me Nellie and Mary Bobbsey having some one-on-one time. Or a ladies' shopping expedition - fancy formal stuff is always fun. Or maybe Nan and/or Nellie are getting married and there's marriage prep. Or maybe Dinah teaching Nan and Nellie some cooking. Just no boys (I'll make an exception for Mr. Bobbsey)! And definitely NOT the younger twins.
If you want to age Nan up some, that's good.
In this fandom, I'm good with the more dated attitudes (i.e. focus on being ladylike) of the 1960s revisions. I'd prefer not to go back further to the period where Dinah is more like a Mammy cariacture.
If you somehow want to combine the Bobbsey girls with Dr. Haledjian, I'd be down to read that.
Anne of Green Gables - Gilbert Blythe, Faith Meredith
What I'd like on this one is some interaction between Gilbert and Faith (thinking primarily in the Rilla of Ingleside period, although something in the Rainbow Valley era could be fun) - if you want to include Anne or Jem, that's fine, but I'm really interested in these two. Sharing concern for Jem, Gilbert's influence on Faith doing VAD work, post-Rilla, Gilbert's first grandchild... all of these are ideas.
I love Anne Shirley, and have since I was introduced to her - but I also like Faith's more brash and somewhat practical way of dealing with issues.
Good luck, and again: I know it's going to be good!
