This year's answer is We Were Soldiers Once...and Young.  I've seen the movie, of course (and had to suffer through a recitation of First Cavalry Division History today), and I have the book on my Kindle, but I've never made my way through it.  I never seem to be in the right mood.

I have the sample for that on my kindle. I started it, but there's the implicit dread that anybody I like is probably going to die horribly. So it's winding up in the same category as GRRM.

Well, it has that whole reality thing. The movie was very good, and I love Sam Elliot's portrayal of CSM Basil Plumley.

Hmmm. I've never seen it. Probably should be next year's Memorial Day movie.

It's good. It does have language (as evidenced by the quote above, as well as my other favorite from the CSM, "who are you, a fucking weatherman?") and a degree of war violence, it's very good. Madeleine Stowe is excellent as Julie Moore, and she's the character that gave it the best moment.
