... it makes me happy in my liberal little heart.

However, what does not make me happy is repeatedly hearing/reading about how people don't care because they "don't let their (heterosexual) sex lives overlap with their work lives".

I have news for them - if they display a picture of their partner on their desk, talk about their partner at work, or just don't hide said partner, they are letting their sex life overlap with their work life.

It's not like all of a sudden, our gay brothers/sisters-in-arms are going to come in talking all about the orgy they went to this weekend.  They can't get married and have their partner recieve benefits, like other married people in the service.

But they won't have to hide it anymore.  They can change their profile pic on Facebook to include their partner, or put a picture of the partner on their desk, or be honest about the fact that their "roommate" isn't just helping them save money on rent.

And for all the people who complain that it's a volunteer force and they volunteered knowing they would have to hide it, please go off somewhere and STFU - especially if you don't wear a uniform.  They signed up, which is more than we can say for a lot of people these days.  They deserve the same respect for their relationship as anyone else.

Of course, how can either of us buy the not letting sex life overlap when we attended Marriage Camp, CA? How many people do we know who limited themselves to San Antonio -or- Ft. Meade because they met someone in another language and branch of service?! Is silly, yes yes yes.

As for me... man. I had a handful of crushes on girls that I'm pretty sure swung both ways, and it would have been nice to act on it. I'm still bemusedly annoyed by how many people think I'm a stupid slag like former Green/now Hustoles and Amanda Fowler pretending to be into girls to get laid. Erm... no. But considering how weird and squirrelly I am, I did my best to hide THAT much as deeply as possible, and didn't even flirt with civilian friends in other towns. -___-

Oh, you would be surprised at the number of people here who think the Married Army Couples Program is a guarantee.

And my students definitely let their sex lives and work lives overlap, let me tell you.

I'm pretty solidly straight, but I can think of a few of our former co-workers who might be breathing easier now if they're still in.

Oh definitely, and it's been great watching my friends in general get to be more open about it; I was quite the fag hag in Monterey. :) Oddly enough, I can only name about three amongst the Ruslings immediately right off-hand, but I know there were definitely more that I'm forgetting about.

Very, very well said. However, none of my co-workers when I was in displayed pictures of their spouses/significant others (at least where I worked). There was a guy who proudly displayed a can of beans with his favorite NASCAR driver on it, though.
