Being Anti-Gay Marriage Is Not About The Sex

It's about The Babies.  And the sex that makes them.

The issue of gay marriage isn't about discrimination of sexual orientation, nor is it directly about sex in general. When a construction manager is looking to hire a new worker, what are the chances that they are going to hire a 5' 0" stick of a woman? The chances are very slim, and it IS discrimination, but it has nothing to do with her gender. If she's not going to be able to perform the job, she's not going to get the job. That's discrimination of ability, and it is an accepted and unanimously practiced form everywhere.

The state endorses marriage because it has a stake in seeing people pair up in sexual unions. Man-Woman pairs are biologically equipped to produce children, a process which is essential to the continuation of government. Therefore, they provide benefits to couples who are likely to head down this path (get married).

Gay marriages provide no such benefit to the state at the moment, and therefore the state has no internal pressure to provide incentives for people seeking gay marriage. Put another way, gay couples do not have the ability to produce the things the government wants from a married couple, so it is less likely to endorse those unions through government sponsored marriage. It has nothing to do with sexual orientation, because everyone of every orientation has the same right: to marry someone of the opposite sex.

There's an attempt to be rational here, which is refreshing.  Except for the whole first paragraph, which I think is trying to prove that it's okay to discriminate on lack of ability for everything, with which I would disagree.

Just because a man and woman are "equipped" to produce children does not mean they will.  Especially when "equipped" seems to equal "one has a penis, the other has a vagina" - because possessing this equipment does not mean you can actually have children.

Some couples will be unable to produce children.  Some will be unwilling.  Are their marriages any less civilly valid?

Yes, the government gives benefits to married couples.  Which is why it's unfair to deny those same civil benefits to gays.

And this whole "they have the right to marry someone of the opposite sex" sounds an awful lot like "they have the right to marry someone of the same race".  As we know, that turned out to be a Wrong Idea.

By the reasoning set forth here, you are correct in concluding that sterile and/or elderly people shouldn't be allowed to marry.

Also, contraception should be outlawed. (Which I won't EVER actually say around one of those folk, as they tend to AGREE with that particular conclusion. Saying "old people can't get married" seems to work better.)
