Oh, the irony.

Bush calls for end of 'occupation' of Arab lands
Vows to do 'all I can' and to make at least one more trip to region
RAMALLAH, West Bank - President Bush, summing up meetings with both sides in the Israeli-Palestinian dispute, said Thursday that a peace accord will require “painful political concessions” by each. Resolving the status of Jerusalem will be hard, he said, and he called for the end of the “occupation” of Arab land by the Israeli military.
“Now is the time to make difficult choices,” Bush said after a first-ever visit to the Palestinian territories, which followed separate meetings with Israeli leaders in Jerusalem the day before.
Bush is in the Mideast for eight days, trying to bolster his goal of achieving a long-elusive peace agreement by the end of his presidency in a year. Speaking at his hotel in Jerusalem, he said again that he thinks that is possible.

I know he's talking about Israel and Palestine. But SSG D and I had to have a good laugh as we read the headline out loud.

Date: 2008-01-11 06:49 am (UTC)Really? Which Arab lands is he occupying without the consent of the residents?

For better or for worse, what we have in Iraq is an occupation. I don't know to what extent the Iraqi people still want us there.
I read your political meme, so we're not going to agree on this subject.
Friending you in return, and apologies for the delay on responding - when you see the stuff under the f-lock, you'll see why.
May I borrow that political meme?

Date: 2008-01-14 02:05 am (UTC)The government in question was democratically elected: it thus has a greater claim to represent the Iraqi people than did the regime that we defeated, and than does the rebellion we're fighting.
For better or for worse, what we have in Iraq is an occupation.
This was originally the case: as Iraqi security forces have become increasingly able to protect their own country, it is more and more becoming a case of military assistance rather than occupation.
I don't know to what extent the Iraqi people still want us there.
Polls indicate that they would like us to leave -- but not before the insurgency is defeated. Note that we almost certainly would leave if the current, democratically-elected Iraqi government asked us to. They are not asking us to leave because they know that if we left now, the consequences for their country would be terrible.
The current Iraqi government is not merely a US puppet: it has demonstrated this by behaving appeasingly toward the Iranians at times when it was diplomatically inconvenient for us. It's not perfect by any means, but it's a better regime than Iraq's ever had before; and far better than anything Iraq is likely to have if we pull out and Iran surges in.
May I borrow that political meme?
Certainly.

Date: 2008-01-14 02:31 am (UTC)From where I'm sitting, it still looks like an occupation.
And it is taking a heavy toll on our Army.
Regardless of whether I like it, we have to deal with it, and get things to turn out as best we can.

Date: 2008-01-13 05:43 pm (UTC)The whole crew seems to be irony deficient, especially the new press secretary, who keeps reminding me of the political officer character from Babylon 5.
