FROM THE ARTICLE:

Menu items for the traditional Thanksgiving dinner with turkey, stuffing, cranberries, pumpkin pie and all the trimmings will cost more this year, but remain affordable, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation.

According to AFBF’s 22nd annual informal survey of the prices of basic items found on the Thanksgiving Day dinner table, the average cost of this year’s dinner for 10 is $42.26, a $4.16 price increase from last year’s average of $38.10.

Am I the only one this seems pretty low to?

The AFBF survey shopping list includes turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, rolls with butter, peas, cranberries, a relish tray of carrots and celery, pumpkin pie with whipped cream and beverages of coffee and milk, all in quantities sufficient to serve a family of 10.

How much does this family of ten eat?  Does everyone have seconds?
I'm also noticing that this does not sound anything like our Thanksgiving menu.

The cost of a 16-pound turkey, at $17.63 or roughly $1.10 per pound, reflects an increase of 12 cents per pound, or a total of $1.93 per turkey compared to 2006. This is the largest contributor to the overall increase in the cost of the 2007 Thanksgiving dinner.

Didn't buy one this year, so I didn't notice the price, I must confess.

A couple other differences I notice: We generally have mashed potatoes, not sweet potatoes (which from the ingredients listed in their article, I assume they are serving candied), as well as a salad instead of a relish tray.  And a fruit salad.

I live in San Francisco, so it sounds absolutely insane to me. I live alone, and am having cornish game hens instead of a turkey, and I still spent $20 at the store tonight; then again, $5 of that was for a 12 pack of diet Coke.

I'm doing a ham, which is more expensive than a turkey. But I'll eat the ham leftovers.

Of course, I also like to have a big veggie snack platter for grazing while watching football games.

Sounds frighteningly like mine. We got one sweet tater for Mom, the rest of us will have good ol' mashed russets.

They call carrots and celery a relish tray? Ours is pickles and olives. And oh yeah, they forgot the gravy! And the pearl onions in cream sauce, but they may be just us.

Mom wanted to get a 16-pound turkey. I reminded her there's only 5 of us, one is short, and we still have Dad's birthday (pork roast, Dec. 3) and Christmas (prime rib roast) coming up, not to even mention our annual New Year's seafood feast. I don't want to be eating turkey 'til Valentine's Day. We got a 12-pounder, instead.
