What hangover ?
Feb. 5th, 2005 05:40 pmA little headache this morning, but better off than a lot of people this morning, I'd bet. However, I shall avoid incriminating my co-workers. Discussion on Tuesday will be... entertaining, though.
First, my Friday did not go exactly as planned. DAR was late again, and so did not get to leave early. We did get lunches though, so nice. Oh yeah, I didn't take one. One of "our" warrant officers had a little luncheon, so we went and raided the food. I had to take one of the AF people over (yes,
raeyn has pics up now. Since I still use that old fashioned *film* stuff, I will have pics up tomorrow. A good time was had by all, except apparently W... who decided to leave before the dinner. For God's sake, we were joking. And we weren't just joking about *him* either. We were joking about all of us. Get a sense of humor, for heaven'sake.
Dinner was good, if slowly served. After the food had been consumed, it was time for the fun. Toasts! With port!
First, a toast to the Queen (raise your hands if you know what American song shares a tune with 'God Save The Queen', class), a toast to the President, a toast to the Navy (complete with history lesson), and a toast to the ladies ("We admire them for their beauty, respect them for their intelligence, something something for their virtues [many many many laughs at this one], and love them because we cannot help it."). Last year's toast to the ladies was more entertaining ("To our wives and sweethearts, may they never meet.").
Then, time for the various honorary marches representing the various corps/branches/services. *Our* very own Brit did the RAF "chair dance". Apparently, it is the tradition that one may stand on the chair (or, on the table if you're steady enough), and the RAF members can hold their arms out and wave them around, pretending to be a plane. It was hilarious. We were mildly worried that she might fall off her chair, but never fear. Their marches are quite pretty, for lack of a better word.
After we worked through the various British and Canadian marches, we started in with the Army Song (or, as they put, the Caisson March). All four of the Army personnel present that I saw (myself, Top, my superintendant and his wife) got up on the tables and proceeded to sing (okay, maybe "sing" is a charitable word - more like "untunefully bellow") along with song. The ending to our "performance", of course, was the draining of glasses.
Not to be outdone, the Marines followed suit. And the Navy, and even our Zoomies.
We ended up the formal portion of the evening with the guest speaker, a funny Navy O-6. A lot of injokes, but better than many "ball speeches" I have sat through.
Then... we danced. And drank. And danced, and drank, and danced and drank... and you get the idea. Much alcohol was consumed, and people got freaky. Pictures were taken. The guilty will not be protected. :)
I was not the DD, but more of the "assistant DD". Kind of annoyed, because I could have just driven there and been fine, and not had to have 2 tires replaced. Luckily, AAFES is having a tire sale so I got a good price. The tow truck driver was quite nice and helpful.
I finished War on Choice, but I want to let that simmer before I comment much on it. I have started a lurid true crime novel about a baby killing nurse (right here in Texas in the early 1980s) and it's good. Depressing, but entertaining.
I am having a spurt of cleaning and organizing, which will extend to tomorrow during the Super Bowl, not to mention scanning of pics. [maniacal laugh goes here]
Off topic - is it just me, or did whoever wrote The Great Alaskan Land Rush for the GI Joe cartoon have a thing for Scarlett? I think it's one of her best episodes for the sarcastic humor and mild flirtation.
Ah, sweet day off work! And there's still 2 left!

Huzzah
Date: 2005-02-05 05:34 pm (UTC)climbing high into the sun.
Here they come zooming to meet our thunder
Atta boy! Give 'er the gun!
Down we dive, shooting our flame from under
Off with one helluva roar!
We live in fame or we die in flames
Hey! Nothing can stop the Army Air Corps!
Glad to hear you all had a lovely time!
I'm afraid my marching skills are long dust (I was a member of the Queen's Guard (http://www.andrewcusack.com/blog/2005/01/about_time.php) at W&M a few decades ago) Now there's a group with an unsingable song.
