On this day five years ago, we were crowded into a barracks hallway, watching the CQ's TV. We had just come back from PT, because no one came down to the PT field to tell units, "Ummmm, there's something on TV you might want to know about". We pulled ourselves away from the TV and into a semblance of a normal morning routine. One thing I do remember about that day was the quiet in the barracks. No stereos blaring, no guy across the hall discussing his sex life loudly enough for me to hear, just people getting ready to go to work - and wondering, "What happens to us now? Where are they sending us?"

I also remember the looks on the faces of the Arabic linguists around me - thinking, "Ohhhh, no."

I'm avoiding the media though, because I don't want to drown in the stuff about New York.

To absent comrades. My brothers and sisters in arms who died at the Pentagon that day - more people, who just like the people in the Towers, just went to work on a Tuesday morning - and all the others who have fallen since in Afghanistan and Iraq, in other places, in combat and in training.

Yes. I, too, am choosing not to listen. I remember going to the WashPost home page when I got to work that day, (even though I lived in Texas at the time, WashPost is my hometown paper...) and seeing the headline about the first tower. I immediately called my husband and was on the phone w/ him when the 2nd tower was hit. Then I heard about the Pentagon. I know so many people who have worked there over the years. I was devastated. Everyone talks about the WTC, but I remember the Pentagon.
