Thundercats on DVD - First Impressions
Aug. 16th, 2005 12:54 amI've watched 4 of the first 5. Skipped one because I remember hating it even as a child.
Observations:
1. Snarf is still annoying, in the stereotypical joker/overlooked yet occasionally useful sidekick character category.
2. Lion-O is still annoying, mainly for the immaturity level. I realize it's supposed to be brash and immature and heroic, but sheesh. I also remember all the time he was stuck in the suspended animation chamber, but still. Oh yeah, and great 80's hair, buddy.
3. Jagga must be having fun hanging out with Ben Kenobi. Except of course when they have to come in and advise their protegees.
4. My fave character is still a tie between Tigra and Cheetara. Mainly because I bonded with them as wise elder siblings. Oh, and does anyone else notice that those two are always off together? Scouting, uh-huh. Riiiiight.
5. Some nice tricks on catly behavior shown.
6. In the beginning, I don't remember them all being naked. Surprised they got away with that one. Must have been the boots.
7. The Sword? That's a pretty smart little piece of cutlery. Although, the first time around, I thought it was the Sword of Olman, since I did not know the word Omen yet. :)
My gripe, however, and part of the reason I'm slightly annoyed. It does NOT look like any restoration went into this. GI Joe, He-Man, and I think the Transformers (I was never a huge transformers fan, so it's hard to tell.) all look awesome. Hell, they look better than they did in the 80s. The color is rich and vivid - and this one does not look like anyone did anything to it. There's one spot in the second ep that obviously came from either a tape or a bad spot on the originals. Considering they're charging 65.00 (got mine on Amazon for 45.44 with Super Saver Shipping - ordered Thursday, got it today) I feel a little cheated.
The box is cool though. :)
