desertvixen: woman reading a book (reading)

I picked up the newest Amanda Quick romance yesterday, which I think was a major factor in my laziness last night. The Quick historicals aren't long, in-depth reads, but they keep you very entertained while you read them and they avoid some of the cliche BS that plagues romance novels. Quick heroines tend towards the short, dark-haired, and sarcastic, which I appreciate greatly.

Unspoilered version: I still prefer her Regencies to her Victorians, but I think that is because I gravitate towards the Regency period. However, I assume the switch was made because she is tired of writing Regencies. This one is solid, although I found the supernatural element to be a touch distracting in places. The various family members (especially his) did make me smile.

Spoilered version:

1. The cover, while pretty, has nothing to do with the story. But it looks GOOD.

2. As it is subtitled An Arcane Society Novel, I wonder if we're going to see more with the same characters, or at least related. I hope so.

3. The female lead is interesting. I like her.

4. The male lead reminds me of something of a cross between the leads of Affair and I Thee Wed.

5. The photography hook is neither overdone nor underused.

6. The mystery is good as well, and the evil female character is nicely evil (as in, oooh evil but good at being evil).

7. The psychic/supernatural stuff is a little annoying right at the end, but tolerable. There's been far worse done.
