#37 – Black Omega

Afterwards, it was the sounds that Cover Girl knew would haunt her dreams.

Weapons firing. The crazy-fast automatic weapons fire during the last stand at headquarters. The sounds different grenades made as they went off. The sound a body made when it hit the floor, lifeless. And now, the calm, measured shots of the two shooters sitting in the back of the truck she was driving. Beach Head and Desert Fox were riding back there, deterring their pursuers, and she could hear them speaking calmly as they reloaded and shot. Cover Girl wondered if their calmness was as forced as her own. None of them could afford to lose their heads, to get crazy, no matter how much they simply wanted to stop and scream from the insanity.

Cover Girl concentrated on driving, the rumble of the engine soothing to her. It was a normal sound, if quieter than the Wolverine she was used to driving. It was a sound that didn’t make her wonder what had gone wrong now, or which teammate was now dead. Mainframe sat next to her, keeping his eyes on his side of the road. They were carrying a precious cargo. Not all of it was tactically important, but they would not abandon any of it, not while they were alive.

The noise from the back of the truck had mostly died down, much to her relief. She could hear Fox’s voice now and again, surprisingly gentle when interspersed with the gunfire. Beach Head hadn’t said a word that didn’t have to do with the weapons or their targets, but Fox had taken it upon herself to try and calm down the children and teenagers who were riding in the back with weapons, ammo, and some commo equipment, along with other assorted supplies. A selfish part of Cover Girl was thankful that the whimpers and cries from the back had stopped. She knew that they’d had their world ripped away from them in a matter of a few hours. Listening to them, however, had grated on her own abused nerves. They had all had their world ripped out from underneath them. As adults, they were supposed to be able to handle it.

Whimpers, moans, shouts, hoarse voiced commands had formed another soundtrack to the hell they had somehow found themselves in. For the rest of her life, Cover Girl knew she would remember General Hawk’s voice as he gave the order for Condition Black Omega. The order they had thought they would never hear, the order to abandon their post and run like hell.

At least, she thought, whatever else might be happening around them, Beach Head was with her. There wasn’t anything the two of them couldn’t tackle together. He was one of the finest soldiers she had ever had the honor of serving with.

Just as important, though, was the fact that he would be the man beside her when it got too quiet, and the dreams came.

Wow! What a great read. I could really feel Cover Girl's emotions through this. I also liked the ending and her comments about Beachhead, both on and off the field.

Terrific job. Very intense piece. You show very nicel how human Courtney is. Can't wait to see more of the Omega Series.
