Reading Update #6
Oct. 4th, 2005 10:35 pmYes, I've been reading on leave. Fancy that.
Callander Square, Rutland Place, and Paragon Walk, all Victorian mysteries by Anne Perry featuring Inspector Thomas Pitt and his wife Charlotte, have been pretty good. If you like Victoriana and slightly lurid mysteries with a dash of humanity, then I would recommend these. Anyone know of a place with a listing of the books in chronological order? Note, I haven't been reading them all one after another.
Dies The Fire by SM Stirling is an excellent alt-history book, featuring the other side of what happened in the Nantucket Trilogy. Basically, an Event that knocks out all the electronics and the gunpowder (yes, the same one that sent Nantucket back into the Bronze Age) and things are not looking good for the human race. I notice he's carrying on with the Scandinavian kick, in a way that should entertain the male readers. I have to agree with Juniper about Mike Havel though. :) The next book on my list is the next in the series, The Protector's War, set eight years later. I am wondering if a certain hookup takes/has taken place. So... we'll find out. This one is a lot darker than the Nantucket trilogy, but then he has put us into a lot worse place.
Just Perfect by Judith A. Lansdowne is, again, a pretty typical book of hers. There's a touch of magic which always seems to invade her books, but I think of the trilogy, I like this one (the second) the best.

Date: 2005-10-04 07:52 pm (UTC)Well, of course you have!
I just finished reading Stirling's _Conquistador_ and enjoyed that. Karl's reading it now. He picked up Dies the Fire recently in paperback, but I need to get through some library books before I start it.

Date: 2005-10-05 09:40 am (UTC)The Protector's War is out in HC, and I'm about 78 pages into it.
Some of the unresolved issues are coming back.... and the Brits are involved as well, which should provide some interesting moments.

Speaking of which, new Honor Harrington coming up soon!

Date: 2005-10-05 09:39 am (UTC)Conquistador was interesting because it was a standalone, and my, wasn't Christiansen a nice hero ? I don't really mind this Scandinavian kick he's been on, no.
Dies The Fire took me a little to get into, and it's significantly darker than the Nantucket books. But it's well worth it.
