The body issues bother me, because if she's built like me, she'll have a figure.
Gymnastics also squick me, for that reason. Both seem to emphasize being small a bit too much - gymnastics more so than ballet.
The leotard, etc, aren't intended to be sexy, as you say. And they would be inappopriate in many situations, ie shopping, school, a restaurant.
