It actually was men who invented monogamy. When all the women are with a few men society becomes a sort of weird oligarchy where most men are sent into exile or dragged into the army as a way of ensuring that the guys who want and can have a ton of wives get them.
The imperialist culture was probably the Proto-Indo-Europeans. They usually get blamed in effed up social theories like this.
