desertvixen: woman reading a book (reading)

I left this one off the reading update, partly because I forgot to record it on my running list, and partly because I usually cover them pretty in-depth. They could be compared to mental popcorn, although I like potato chips as a better model: you may only intend to eat one or two, but before you know it, you've eaten the whole bag.

Unspoilered version: Good, but not her best. I was a little apprehensive about a certain aspect after reading the book jacket, but it was handled nicely. I also managed to pick the villain, but it basically came down to choosing the more shocking of two choices. It's an enjoyable read though, but I wouldn't recommend this as a starting point for someone to enter the series.

Spoilered version: Another one of the "bad crime happens to good people" grouping, it rattles along at a good pace. Most of the regulars make their appearance - Peabody, McNabb, Dr. Mira, Somerset, Louise DiMatto, Morris, Whitney, Nadine, Trina, Mavis (and the baby) and Baxter/Truehart - but the "extended cast" isn't in play. One of the people who gets killed is in the "slimeball" category, so you aren't too sad or too surprised to see him go. The killer is obvious at one point, just because it's the more shocking of two choices, and the time the author has spent dwelling on a piece of backstory that provides some of the motivation. Eve and Peabody get her in a neat little trap, but the end of the book is somewhat depressing. Maybe it just bothered me more because I have a child now. The Eve/Roarke/old girlfriend subplot was getting on my nerves at first, but she didn't take it where I thought she would, so I was okay with it. Besides, Somerset and Eve being nice to each other is always entertaining. I was starting to get irritated with Eve being stupid, but the motivation behind the plot is not so much to show Eve and Roarke dealing with it, but to show Eve dealing with the major female figures in her life - Mira, Mavis, and Peabody.
