Representative Henry Waxman (D-CA) had a little study done on abstinence only programs focusing on FY 2003.
This is the report.
Like many Doonesbury comics lately, this would be funny if this wasn't actually happening.

Moral values....
Date: 2006-09-03 02:37 pm (UTC)From my first skim of the report it doesn't appear to discuss the actual _effectiveness_ of the abstinence-only programs. I know that other sources have found that to be, well, low.
How about some suggestions for topics that a _real_ abstinence based sex ed program would include?
-- for both girls and boys, the warning signs of when an adult authority figure or relative might be making sexual advances and how to cope with them. How to report sexual abuse by an adult authority figure including relatives and religious leaders.
-- self-esteem and social negotiating skills for girls to make saying no emotionally feasible vs. boys their own age.
-- basic self-defense skills for girls, the same
-- for both sexes, actual information on masturbation in order to lower the levels of sexual tension to the point where brain cells can engage. (Let's face it, a continous b*ner from ages fourteen to eighteen would mess up _anyone's_ thinking.)

Sadly, recent studies suggest that the current crop of teenage girls have, erm, "caught up" with their male counterparts in a whole gamut of socially-questionable "achievements". So much so, that I would suggest these particular line items in your list be provided to young people of both genders.
