A cute comic featuring stabs at Bill Napoli of the great state of South Dakota. You know, Mr. "No abortions for rape victims unless you were viciously raped, brutalized, sodomized, just horrible" Senator?

And, on the uplifting bit:

http://www.indianz.com/News/2006/013061.asp

Oglala Sioux Tribe in South Dakota will have a big "screw you" in response to the ban on abortion.
“I will personally establish a Planned Parenthood clinic on my own land which is within the boundaries of the Pine Ridge Reservation where the State of South Dakota has absolutely no jurisdiction.”

And if you're interested in putting your money where your mouth is:

I plan to write them a check, that's for sure.

Edit: See comments for further info on the situation.

I had an evil thought, which really only works in certain fanfic universes. What if the South Dakota Governor, and all the congress-critters that voted for it, came down with male pregnancy? (or ordinary female, if there were any). IIUC, according to the bill there's nothing they could do about it - they'd have to have the babies! How long would the law survive?

Really, it would depend on their staff. A good pro-choice staff could have the repeal turned around in an hour or so, I'm sure. A pro-life staff could stall it long enough that they'd carry it to term before the typist is done.

In the words of Florynce R. Kennedy:

"If men could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament."

On another note, I shall be putting my money where my mouth is.

That senator bugs me deep down in my soul. Abortion is wrong, unless you're a Godly virgin who was planning on waiting for marriage who is then horribly abused. because you know, rape is such a great thing if you've already had sex *rolls eyes*

I saw the article about the Souix yesterday and was cheering. :D We don't have money right now, but if I did, it would be supporting the cause.

Ummmm, the abortion business is not a chance to make some money. It is not a casino.
I will say this again and again until I am blue in the face, if you live in South Dakota and you need an abortion, you CALL The National Abortion Federation and they will help get you one. That is their job.
You just don't open an abortion clinic willy nilly.

I don't see it so much as setting up an abortion clinic as getting a Planned Parenthood clinic which would provide women's health care services, including abortions and birth control. Something, which, if it's like a lot of othe reservations I saw in the Southwest, is NEEDED.

With that in mind, click the link: http://tezliana.livejournal.com/174980.html

The possibilities are that she either a) mispoke, and meant a reproductive services clinic, not necessarily a PP clinic or b) got a little ahead of herself.

At face value - I don't think she is trying to make money off of it. I think she sees that women need certain services available to them in South Dakota and wants to do something about it. The fact that it's on reservation land leads to the point that there is nothing the state can do about it. From what I have read about her thus far, she has done a lot for her nation since being sworn in. There HAS been an investigation, but she was cleared and reinstated. I will go get some links if you would like.

actually it wasn't really her I was speaking of. I know nothing about the woman, and don't percieve her as bad or immoral person at all.(More like the idea of profiting from a ban there specifically....) I was speaking of the abortion industry and how some clinic owners/directors try too damn hard to profit from it.Instead of turning the money around to do good, and prevent unwanted pregnancy.

I see. I just don't know where you're getting this angle with this particular person/case, since it was the one woman who made the comment. What is done is done in South Dakota and hopefully new politicians who actually care about women and their rights take over and things will change. I'm not being hopeless, but if this woman - who, if I remember correctly, was/is a nurse - is willing to do something about it and can actually do something and the state not be able to do it, how is that a bad thing? From what I've read, she has made a lot of improvements since being sworn in, so I really don't see her as wanting to make a profit.

The big picture - you definately have a point. Everyone is trying to make a buck at someone else's expense. The US government trying to privatize (don't know what is going on with that right now) air traffic control, for example - where's the money to be made in that industry, you know?
