Yuletide Recs, Round One: Brought to you by the letters A, B, C, T, V, W, P
So, after reading my gift story, I usually try to read the Archive in some semblance of order. There's over 1600 fandoms this year, and I usually just start with the big alphabetical list, rather than sorting by type of fandom. This way I don't miss anything.
1. Miss Scarlet / In the Hallway / Without the Revolver (Clue)- This was my gift story, and if you are a fan of Miss Scarlet, you must stop in and read this story. My prompt was to imagine that Miss Scarlet was really the FBI agent. It's funny, taking the pieces of the movie and reassembling them into something even more awesome. Also, if you like Mrs. White and/or Yvette, you should read this. They have awesomeness as well.
2. A New Morning (Anne of Green Gables) - This is a bittersweet AU where Walter lives. It's quite well-done.
3. The Cold Never Bothered Me Anyways (Anne of Green Gables) - This one was written for a prompt asking for a Dora-centric story, and the author works in Jane Andrews (pre-millionaire days) as well. It's an interesting look at Anne and Davy Keith from another perspective.
4. The Moving Finger Writes, and Having Writ Moves On (Anne of Green Gables) - This one was the best of the AOGG stories. It's Walter-centric, incredibly touching and sad, set in the WWI timeframe. There is a hinted-at m/m relationship, but nothing explicit. I feel like to say any more would ruin it for you.
5. Never Mind (Baby-Sitters' Club) - There were actually several BSC stories this year, but most of them are of a slashy bent (by which I mean EVERYONE seems to be slashed) and that's not really my thing. This one is the year's Charlie Thomas/Janine Kishi story, and it's very good. There's a lot of backstory nodded at - the story is very fun. I also like it because it shows a logical development for Janine, rather than some drastic "away at college" change. This was one of my favorite parts:
She thought about what she could possibly say, and she thought about what might happen if she were wrong about what he was thinking.
And then she stopped thinking about it, stepped up to him, and kissed him.
Go Janine!
6. Something Old, Something New (Baby-Sitters' Club) - This was the best of the "future fic" that I've seen for the BSC in a while. There is an incredible "meeting as reunion" scene, and just tons of little details that really made it for me. The story centers on Charlie Thomas/Mary Anne Spier getting married, but all the girls have a nice bit.
7. The Honey Glow (Wreck-It Ralph) elix/Calhoun story with great dialogue.
8. Homebound (Wreck-It Ralph) - This is a good Ralph and Vanellope story about having a home, and her being able to visit the rest of the arcade world. It also addresses how the Q*bert guys got into the game and got a home again. The insults from Vanellope are well done.
9. Shifting Gears (Wreck-It Ralph) - Taffyta is having a little difficulty adjusting to their "new" normal. I almost felt a little sorry for her for a second...
10. The Game's Afoot (Westing Game) - Turtle and Alice play some games - it's very cool (and if you've played some of the games in the story, very true to life!)
11. Compensation (Westing Game) - This is a good story with Turtle and Judge Ford, and it addresses how Sam Westing and Josie-Jo Ford would have interacted. Very good.
12. The Theodorakis Guide to the Heirs of North America (Westing Game) - This is a Chris-centric story and I have to tell you, it might be one of the best stories of this year's Yuletide. This is one of the stories that just blows you away, touches on the characters, expands them into the future, and it's just incredible. And I love the title! There's also an intriguing what-if in the story I may follow up on.
13. World Enough and Time (Venetia) - Venetia/Damerel, sweet non-explicit piece.
14. Learning (Tangled) - This is a cute story about Rapunzel adjusting to the princess thing, and addresses some issues she would have had.
15. Old Dreams (Tangled) - This is one of those where the author takes what the source fandom gives us, and runs with it, and just makes it awesome. More Flynn/Eugene centric, about his back story.
16. Five Lives That Could Have Been(Toy Story Movies) - Vignettes about Woody and Jessie, and how things could have turned out differently. I liked the two Jessie vignettes the best (which is odd, because I didn't really care for her). Very well-done.
17. Terms and Conditions (Twilight Zone) - Creepy story that will make you want to read those agreements a little more closely.
18. Marion of the Greenwood (Twisted Disney Princesses) - I'm a huge Disney Robin Hood fan, and while I hate the thought of Robin dead, this story makes it worth it. The rest of the Plantagenets show up as animals, and it follows history to its conclusion (it was kind of a letdown to read history and realize that "Good King Richard" was pretty useless to his actual people), and then just explodes. There is a warning for major character death, I believe, but it's canonical and not very explicit (and yet I could see it too perfectly). I loved the ending. I think this is also one of the best stories of this year.
19. The Dragon Lady (Twisted Disney Princesses) - A supernatural Mulan story (featuring her as a sort of wandering hitchhiker), very good!
20. And I Will Try To Be Asleep When You Come to Wake Me (She-Ra/He-Man) - A good look at what it would be like for Adora to adjust to Eternia. This one also had an intriguing what-if as well.
21. Queen and Consequence (The Princess Diaries) - So imagine that a Hallmark-style movie channel made a movie about Mia and Nick. It is very funny, and well done by all the characters, along with poking some fun at the movie and actors.
