 No Fun Allowed

That why my girls will never dance ANYTHING. I want them to be obedient and be modest. Any dance outfit I have seen is immodest. I'm always telling my girls that any clothing that shows their figure is wrong and God doesn't like it... I even find Irish dancing wrong, not in the dress code, but it the fact that it's not for God: so I don't care how much they beg and whine... no dance in this house...ever.

This is just sad.  Not horrible cruelty, but just petty.

I sympathize with the desire to dress your children modestly.  I am looking at the 4-6X clothes, and cringing mentally.  But condemning dance outfits as immodest strikes me as silly.

 Just sad.

Dude, I have had belly dance outfits that were modest. She's just a tool. :)

Second the opinion.

He is a real honest to God psychopath. That post scares me.

She, I think.

It just depresses me.

That reminds me of an off-color Baptist joke...

But that attitude is so common, though, and not just among the real fundies. I'm all for asceticism, but that's more so that one can enjoy things. (footnote, Merton) But I wonder if some of the Protestant denial of certain things (alcohol, dancing, anything resembling fun or laughter) isn't rooted in pride.

I think I know the one you refer to.

Why don't they have sex standing up? That way nobody would accuse them of dancing...

If you read the thread that link goes to, there are some other women that take this person to task.

I did go and read it. And actually clicked through to one of the dance studios.

I'm all for "appropriate place and time", which is a huge problem when I'm out in public. Every time I see a 13 year old wearing more makeup to the mall than I wore to my prom - I cringe.

[livejournal.com profile] rockahulababy and I had dinner last week, and there was this trio at the table next to us. The three year old had on as much jewelry as the two of us together, and the mother and grandmother were members of the Big Helmet Hair club.

I still just find it sad.

The lack of joy made me sad, but I did find it nice that at least one of the people responding said "Well, that's YOUR gig. We dont all do that."

Sorry, that comment was snippier sounding than I meant it.

Yes, some of the people seemed as annoyed with her as we are. :)

The most important thing is knowing that 1) you have to have the extra on stage and 2) teaching your kids that some things are only appropriate in certain times/places. Like leotards and tights for dancing, and other stuff, like not wearing nasty sweaty gym clothes places if you don't have to.

No worries.

And dude....Irish dancing is out? How do you know it's not for God? Jebus!

I agree that some dance outfits/types of dancing are more provocative than I would be comfortable with, but she's throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

[identity profile] desert-vixen.livejournal.com 2008-05-21 12:38 am (UTC)(link)

I'm NOT comfortable with stuff like the beauty pageants, pushing little girls to dress in imitation of grown women. The sexy factor bothers me.

But ballet doesn't strike me as being immodest at all.

I'm not sure I want the MV to be heavily involved in it, but I definitely want her to try it if she wants to.

I'm not a fan of ballet, for the body image issues. I could see how tights and a leotard though could be considered immodest - you certainly couldn't get me to put that on *L* But I think it's going overboard. That's not intended to be "sexy", it's just easier to dance in.

[identity profile] desert-vixen.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 11:19 am (UTC)(link)

The body issues bother me, because if she's built like me, she'll have a figure.

Gymnastics also squick me, for that reason. Both seem to emphasize being small a bit too much - gymnastics more so than ballet.

The leotard, etc, aren't intended to be sexy, as you say. And they would be inappopriate in many situations, ie shopping, school, a restaurant.

I've done some digging back through the FSTDT site. This person seriously needs a padded cell and some happy pills. Reminds me of my (sadly, late) online friend Melsy in KC, whose mother saw religious omens in Alpha-Bits cereal and alphabet soup.

I found a post on FSTDT that shoved a couple of my hot buttons, hop on over to my site for the read, if you'd like.
