Airplane really is a well-done classic of that genre. Someone writing about it recently hit the nail on the head for me, though, and it was that a) they really are telling a story there, it's not just an amalgam of dumb shit from other movies, although b) it is that, because several lines in the movie are lifted verbatim from other, non-comedies, such as, "The life of everyone on board depends upon just one thing: finding someone back there who can not only fly this plane, but who didn't have fish for dinner." It's just that they do it so well, unless you had seen the movie it came from, you might not notice. Other movies like that, these days, lift most of what they're spoofing from the trailers, which everyone has seen.
