Memorial Day

For all those who gave their everything for our freedom today...

For all those who gave up some of their soul, but came home...

For all those who are serving today, on duty around the globe...

It's Memorial Day. Take a moment and think about the soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Reading Post #21

I think it's a little early, but I'm at the end of the page in the notebook, so...

(Hi, yes, I'm such a reading geek that I a)track books I have read and b)have an Excel spreadsheet devoted to them.)

I sort of flipped through it, but Brian brought me back a side-by-side translation of Pride and Prejudice in English and Arabic. It's a little simplified, but not much.

Southampton Row, one of the Anne Perry mysteries, was better than the last one. I'm on pins and needles wondering when she's going to bring some closure to the romance sub-plot. I'm also wondering when one of the characters is going to make her exit.

Engaging the Enemy, the third book in Elizabeth Moon's Vatta's War series, was reviewed previously here:

Beneath A Silent Moon was the second of Tracy Grant's dark Regencies. I have it in HC only because I found it on the bargain rack. Not the best piece of writing I've ever gone through, but I did enjoy the twisted family dyanmics going on.

The Ruling Caste by David Gilmour was one I read while researching my Brit Empire final paper, on the lives and times of Indian Civil Service agents during the Victorian Era. It had personal profiles as well as historical tidbits, which made it entertaining and useful.

For those who are into juvenile literature, they are reissuing the Choose Your Own Adventure! books. I picked up #16, Secret of the Ninja, which I owned in an earlier printing. The only real change I see in this one is the artwork, because in mine, the POV character was a female and in the new one, it's a male.

The Barbara Metzger mention in an earlier post was referring to one of the nice little 2-in-1 reissues. This one featured Rake's Ransom, which was all right andA Loyal Companion, which was much more enjoyable. The tie for this pair was that they both featured dogs. A Loyal Companion was partly told by the dog, which seemed hokey but wasn't. They're both typical Metzger fare, and enjoyable.

Then, courtesy of one of my book clubs, I had the chance to get my hands on the first 4 Cherry Ames books. I've read three of them (Student Nurse, Senior Nurse, Army Nurse). It's pretty entertaining. Keeping in mind that they were written in the WW2 period, the propaganda level is still quite entertaining. I had my interest piqued after reading about Cherry in some of the Nancy Drew-related stuff, including the parody Confessions of a Teen Sleuth.

You can find out more about Cherry here: http://www.netwrx1.com/CherryAmes/

Finally, another entry in the Lilian Jackson Braun series, The Cat Who Went Into The Closet is one I vaguely remember reading earlier on in my reading career, but this one was pretty entertaining.
