Just finished Thankless in Death, JD Robb's newest.  General verdict is that it's not as great as some of the best books, but a solid outing.

More specific things: Nicely done tension - there's definitely a high "senseless waste" factor, but the scene where victim #3 finds him waiting in her apartment was nicely tense, gave you that "everything's going to be o---no it's not" feeling.  Eve's frustration comes through good.

There's also the scene where Eve turns down her captain's bars.  She's not ready to step away from her first, best calling - investigation.  I imagine if NR/JDR ever decides to end the series, it will end with Eve getting those bars.  Eve (and Roarke) also are awarded the Medal of Honor, in a pretty nicely done scene.

Character visit from the Department of Past Books: Nixie Swisher (from Survivor in Death).  I know when that book came out, a few of us who read JDR were concerned that Eve and Roarke were going to adopt Nixie.  That did not happen.  Instead, it was very well-handled, with a tie back to an older book.  That tie gets revisited, and I really enjoyed it, but I really liked Nixie in her previous book.

The holiday party of the book is done just enough to satisfy, not enough to get bogged down in sentimentality.
All in all, worth the read.
